Frequently Asked Questions

How do you grow your produce?

We grow our produce year-round in high-tech indoor spaces we call Machine Farms. We grow without soil or harmful chemicals with a mineral nutrient solution which the plants soak up through their root systems.

Our entire operations are on site in a complete clean room set up, from seed transplant to harvesting and packing. Through our automated systems, we are able to  ensure that temperature, humidity and light levels are exactly the right balance. Complete control of the growing environment create ideal conditions for our greens to thrive.

Where can I find your Machine Farms?

You can find us in Klang Valley and Langkawi.  We are expanding to other states soon.

Can I visit your Machine Farm?

Currently, we are not open to the public but if you are educator or teacher looking to introduce controlled environment agriculture (CEA) for your students, please email us at hello@boomgrowfarms.com for us to arrange for a virtual learning tour with an Agronomist.

Are you certified organic?

As we don’t grow on soil , we cannot be certified organic.  Organic produce, whilst fantastic, do not translate into chemicals or pesticide free. Organic certification defines how food is produced in soil but does not necessarily address quality, safety, resource consumption or nutritional value – all issues that BoomGrow addresses through our expert growers, high quality products, comprehensive food safety programme, freshness and year-round local production.

What is Controlled Environment Agriculture?

Precision farming  or  controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) is a technology-based approach towards food production. The aim of CEA is to provide protection and maintain optimal growing conditions throughout the development of crop.  As a result, we no longer battle with the external elements and instead focus on data control.  We diligently monitor our seed to plate value chain to ensure that growing, harvesting and packing indoors allows for the highest level of control over pests and disease but focused on nutrition. Advancements in machine learning and data analysis allow us to monitor the  health of our produce and get better at it.  The Machine Farm would not have been conceivable without advancements in spectrum lighting and artificial intelligence.

How are your plants nutritious if they’re not grown in soil?

Our nutrients are water soluble versions of the same ones you would find naturally occurring in the most fertile of soil environments, and this nutrient-rich water is taken up directly by the roots of our plants. By monitoring the growing process 24/7 and capturing data at each step, we give our crops exactly what they need and nothing more.

What is your packaging made out of?

Our packaging is made from recycled post-consumer content. We believe the right packaging allows us to reduce waste while protecting the integrity of our greens once they leave our farm. Packaging plays a critical role in preserving safety and quality of our produce. Our packaging is designed to minimise food waste in order to maintain shelf life.

To Package or Not to Package?

There has been a surge in awareness of the damage that plastic pollution does to our planet in recent years. This extends to food packaging.

A major reason supermarkets use so much packaging is to protect food and prevent waste, particularly with fresh food. More than 50% of food waste takes place in households. Some research suggest that the use of just 1.5g of plastic film for wrapping a cucumber can extend its shelf life from three days to 14 days and selling grapes in plastic bags or trays has reduced in-store wastage of grapes by 20%. Simply removing plastic from food packaging is not as sustainable as one might think. There are lots of cases where plastic packaging can be beneficial at reducing waste (until affordable bio-based packaging becomes a reality).

Food supply chains are complex networks with lots of parts. BoomGrow has tried to simplify all of this by getting the production right, through investing in technology, being located next to customers and reaching them within a few hours after harvest, not a few days.  We have however thought hard of how to balance single single use plastic with managing our produce freshness.

For this, we request our customers to play their part. We will send your produce in plastic wraps and packages but we ask you to-reuse the packages. To store odd bits of vegetables, as a bin liner, a make-up pouch, anything. If you wish for us to collect your used package bags for re-use, do send us a message and we will take it off you during your next delivery.

What is BoomGrow’s approach to food safety?

We are committed to maintaining the highest level of food safety standards. All of our farms  apply clean room safety  protocols and comply with prevailing regulations. Additionally, BoomGrow is working with regulators and partners to promote food safety and sustainability within the controlled environment agriculture industry.

Are you expanding to any new markets?

Yes! We will announce our next locations in the coming months.

Can I open up a BoomGrow farming franchise?

We’re focused on scaling our operations and currently not franchising. But stay tuned, we will announce if there are changes.

If you are a member of the press interested in our farms, please email hello@boomgrowfarms.com

I’d love to work at BoomGrow. How can I apply?

Thanks for your interest. As a next step, please visit our careers page to apply for available positions. If you don't see a position that fits your experience, you are still welcome to send us your resume and we will reach out if a position matching your skills and experience opens up.

How do I store the produce I receive?

Keep all produce immediately in the chiller section of your refrigerator. Also keep fruits in a separate chiller or another sealed box as some fruits emit a pesky gas called ethylene that cause vegetable rot.

Where do you deliver to?

We deliver throughout Klang Valley and Langkawi.

How long does it take for the vegetable bags to arrive at my doorsteps after I have made payment?

Deliveries are made Monday – Saturday: 12pm – 7pm, excluding public holidays. You will receive your produce within the same week based on next available delivery date to your area. You will always receive maximum within 6 hours of harvest.

Do you deliver your produce directly to consumers?

We do door to door delivery to consumers in Klang Valley. For monthly bundle options, delivery is free. You will soon be able to get our produce in some stores in your neighbourhood. We will keep you posted.

 When do you harvest?

We harvest everyday. Your order will be placed in our system and will be slotted to the next available harvest date.

Do you offer contactless delivery?

Please leave a delivery note upon checkout should you prefer contactless delivery, or notify our delivery person when they call you before arriving. However, we don’t advise leaving your produce at your gate for long in the tropical weather!

What happens if my selected produce/bundles are out of stock after placing an order?

Please bear with us. We are dealing with biology and there’s only so much we can do with tech. There are times when we can still have issues with our harvest. We will call as soon as possible you to notify should this be the case and update you on the remaining availability of produce selections. Otherwise, we will fully refund you.

What is your returns/refund policy?

Simply send us a Whatsapp with a picture of what you are not satisfied with. We have a no quibbles returns policy (but can’t refund transport cost). Whatsapp No: 019-2341808 or email us at bgrowers@boomgrowfarms.com
